Charley Barford Makes History for Zimbabwe at Aachen
October 23, 2026
Zimbabwean showjumper Charley-Ann Barford achieved a historic milestone in August 2026, becoming the first Zimbabwean to compete at the FEI Jumping World Championship. Riding Odiena Van Berimar in Aachen, Germany, she represented her country on one of equestrian sport’s biggest international stages.
Raised in Zimbabwe and later based in South Africa, Charley combines her competitive career with coaching. At CC Equestrian in Kyalami, she helps riders develop their skills while continuing to pursue her own ambitions. For the young riders she teaches, her achievements offer an inspiring example of where dedication can lead.
Her road to Aachen involved several months in Europe, training and competing to meet the championship’s qualifying requirements. That commitment earned her the opportunity to compete against the world’s leading riders and bring Zimbabwe’s flag into the world championship jumping arena.
Charley’s longer-term ambition is to qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Her Aachen debut marks an important milestone as she gains international experience and works towards that goal.
For Zimbabwe and the wider FEI Group IX community, her achievement is a proud moment—and encouragement for the next generation of riders with international dreams.
